Profile, width and fit
Two bands of the same metal can feel completely different on the hand. These are the points worth settling before anything is made.
- Profile: how the band is shaped, flat, softly domed or curved, decides how it feels on the finger and how it sits against other rings.
- Width: a wider band reads differently on the hand and uses more metal, so it is worth trying more than one width.
- Comfort and size: the size is taken properly rather than guessed, because a band is worn every day.
- Beside an engagement ring: a straight band can leave a gap against a low-set stone or a curved shoulder. A band shaped to the ring avoids it, and it is easiest to plan before the first ring is made.
- Metals: if two rings are worn together, match their metals, because the softer one wears.
- Eternity rings: a full eternity band, with stones all the way round, generally cannot be resized, so the size matters at the start.

Can you make a band to sit beside an engagement ring made elsewhere?
Yes. Bring the engagement ring in. Gavin designs a shaped band against the actual ring rather than a photograph, so the band follows the profile of the setting with a deliberate line instead of a gap. It can be plain, or set with small natural diamonds that stop where the engagement ring's shoulders begin.
Do you design men's wedding bands?
Yes. Men's bands are designed with Gavin in the same way as any other piece, around the width, profile and finish you will be comfortable wearing every day. The Journal article on choosing a men's wedding band is a good place to start before you come in.
Can an eternity ring be resized later?
Generally not. A full eternity band has stones set the entire way round, so there is no plain metal left to cut and add to. That is why the size is taken carefully at the start. If you want a ring that can be adjusted later, ask Gavin about a plain or lightly set band.
Can I design wedding rings with Gavin by video call?
Yes. Consultations are private and by appointment, in person at the Illovo studio or by video call on Teams, Google Meet or Zoom. If you want to see the rings on your hand and have your size taken, an in-person visit is the better choice.
