Wedding videographers

How raw footage, drone use and clear audio for vows and speeches actually work in wedding videography, and the questions worth asking before you book anyone.

A wedding videographer films and edits a short film of the day, usually built around the ceremony, speeches and first dance, and sometimes delivers a longer documentary cut alongside a shorter highlight. That is a considerably larger job than a proposal videographer's single scene, since it has to hold clear audio and coherent footage across many hours in changing light.

The service exists for couples who want to hear the vows and the speeches again, not only see stills of the day. A photograph holds a moment; a film holds what was actually said, which is the part many couples find they want most a year or two later.

Not every couple wants a camera running through personal moments like vows or speeches, and some prefer photography alone. That is a genuine preference rather than an oversight, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than booking video because it seems expected.

This category shows verified videographers once they exist for a location. Where none is verified yet, the page says so, and the guidance below still applies.

Where to go next

Gavin would rather leave a page empty than fill it with names he cannot stand behind, and checking a business properly takes time, so these pages fill slowly.

In the meantime, the guidance above is the part that helps: how to choose, what to ask, and what usually goes wrong. If you want a name, Gavin will tell you who he has worked alongside, and why.

How to choose

Choosing well.

Watch a complete wedding film start to finish rather than a ninety-second highlight reel, since the highlights disguise shaky handheld footage, poor audio and clumsy positioning far more easily than a full cut can.

Raw footage, drone use and audio

Ask specifically whether you receive the raw footage or only the edited film, since some videographers hand over everything and others keep the raw material. Ask whether drone footage is included and confirm the operator is properly licensed to fly at your venue, since this is a genuine legal requirement in South Africa, not a formality.

Ask how they capture clear audio during the vows and the speeches specifically, since a camera microphone across a room rarely produces usable sound and a lapel microphone on the officiant or the speaker usually does. Confirm whether the music used in the edit is properly licensed for your use, and how many edit versions are included in the price.

What to ask

  1. Can we watch a complete wedding film from start to finish, not just a highlight reel?
  2. Do we receive the raw footage, or only the edited version?
  3. Is drone footage included, and are you licensed to operate one at our venue?
  4. How will you capture clear audio for the vows and the speeches specifically?
  5. How long does the final edit take, and how many versions are included?
  6. Is the music used in the edit properly licensed for our use?
  7. What is your backup plan if equipment or a memory card fails during the day?
  8. What is the deposit, and how does postponement for weather work?

Contracts and logistics

A deposit typically secures the date, with the balance due around delivery of the finished film. Cancellation and postponement terms differ between videographers, and drone-dependent shots in particular need a written fallback, since drones cannot legally or safely fly in high wind or rain.

Confirm the coverage hours included and what happens if the day runs late, and confirm the arrival time on the day itself, which should be ahead of the first formal moment being filmed. Ask what happens to equipment and audio devices, such as a lapel microphone on the officiant, once the ceremony has finished.

Checklist

  • Watch a complete wedding film from one real day, not just a highlight reel.
  • Confirm whether raw footage is included or only the edited version.
  • Confirm drone operator licensing and a written fallback for wind or rain.
  • Ask specifically how vow and speech audio will be captured clearly.
  • Confirm the music in the edit is properly licensed.
  • Get the deliverables list and edit turnaround confirmed in writing.
  • Confirm the cancellation and postponement policy before paying a deposit.

Questions

Asked often.

Do we need both a photographer and a videographer?

Not always, though many couples in South Africa book both because they capture genuinely different things: stills for printing and framing, film for the words and movement of the day. If budget is limited, decide which you would rather have on a difficult day: it is a fair, practical way to choose rather than assuming both are compulsory.

Can a drone film our ceremony?

Only if the operator is properly licensed and the venue permits it, and even then a drone cannot legally or safely fly in high wind, rain or close to certain airports and reserves. Ask the videographer for their licensing details directly and confirm with the venue separately, since a venue's own rules can be stricter than the general legal minimum.

How long is a typical wedding highlight film?

Highlight films commonly run from around three to eight minutes, though the right length depends on how much of the day you want captured and how the videographer edits. A longer documentary-style cut of the ceremony and speeches, sometimes twenty minutes or more, is often offered as a separate deliverable alongside the shorter highlight.

What if the officiant or a guest does not want to be filmed?

Say so to the videographer clearly before the day, since a specific request is easy to work around if it is known in advance and awkward to fix afterwards. A professional videographer will adjust framing or ask the person to sign a short waiver excluding them, rather than treating the request as unusual.
