Honeymoon planning

General guidance on planning a honeymoon after the wedding, including timing, documents and travelling with jewellery.

Honeymoon planning covers the trip after the wedding itself: booking it, timing it against the wedding weekend, and working out the practical questions specific to travelling as a newly married couple, including what happens to the jewellery.

Some couples leave the morning after the wedding; many more leave a week or two later, once the gifts are opened and the thank-you notes are underway, and there is no correct answer between the two beyond what actually suits you.

Destination matters for what this page can usefully say: the Kruger or the coast within South Africa involves different planning from a trip abroad, particularly around documents and insurance, and the guidance below flags where that difference matters rather than treating every honeymoon as the same trip.

Where to go next

Gavin would rather leave a page empty than fill it with names he cannot stand behind, and checking a business properly takes time, so these pages fill slowly.

In the meantime, the guidance above is the part that helps: how to choose, what to ask, and what usually goes wrong. If you want a name, Gavin will tell you who he has worked alongside, and why.

How to choose

Choosing well.

Decide on timing before you decide on a destination

Leaving the day after the wedding suits some couples and exhausts others, since it stacks travel on top of a day that is already tiring in its own right. A week or two's gap gives you time to recover, open gifts and deal with anything left over from the wedding before you leave, at the cost of a slightly longer wait for the trip itself.

South Africa versus abroad changes the planning, not just the packing

A honeymoon in the Kruger or along the coast involves a shorter flight, no visa, and cover that is more straightforward to confirm with a South African insurer. A honeymoon abroad adds documents, currency and travel insurance terms that need checking properly rather than assumed. Neither is better; they simply need different amounts of lead time.

What to ask

  1. How much lead time do we need for the destination we want, particularly for visas if travelling abroad?
  2. Does our travel insurance need to be arranged specifically for the honeymoon, or does existing cover apply?
  3. What documents do we need if either of us has recently changed a surname?
  4. Is our destination affected by seasonal weather that would change when we should go?
  5. What is the cancellation policy if the wedding date itself has to move?
  6. Do we need any additional cover specifically for jewellery travelling with us?
  7. What is realistic to book now versus closer to the date?
  8. If we are travelling within South Africa, what should we know about the specific region we are visiting?

Contracts and logistics

Book and pay deposits with the same care you would for any other significant wedding cost: in writing, with a clear cancellation policy in case the wedding date or the trip itself has to change.

If either ring, or any other jewellery, is travelling on the honeymoon, treat that as its own small piece of planning alongside the trip: what is worn, what is left at home, and what your insurance actually covers once you cross a border.

Checklist

  • Decided on timing: the day after the wedding, or a week or two later
  • Checked visa and document requirements for the destination, if travelling abroad
  • Confirmed travel insurance covers the honeymoon specifically, including worldwide cover if relevant
  • Decided what jewellery is travelling and confirmed insurance cover for it
  • Checked the cancellation policy against the possibility of the wedding date moving
  • Confirmed any surname changes are reflected on travel documents before booking
  • Checked seasonal weather for the destination against the planned dates

Questions

Asked often.

Should we leave for the honeymoon the day after the wedding?

Some couples do and are glad of the change of pace; others find it exhausting on top of an already long day and prefer a week or two's gap to recover, open gifts and settle before they travel. There is no correct answer here, only what genuinely suits the two of you, and it is worth deciding early since it affects the rest of the booking.

Does our engagement ring or wedding band need special cover for the honeymoon?

Confirm with your broker that your existing jewellery cover extends worldwide and ask about any limit on consecutive days abroad, well before you travel. If a piece is coming with you, treat it the same way you would on any trip: carried, not checked, and kept on you or properly secured rather than left in a hotel room by habit.

Do we need a visa for a honeymoon within South Africa?

No, a honeymoon within South Africa, whether the Kruger, the coast or the Winelands, does not involve a visa for South African citizens, which is one reason some couples choose to stay local for a first trip together. It still involves its own planning around season, distance and weather, which is worth as much attention as a trip abroad would get.

What if the wedding date changes after we have booked the honeymoon?

This is exactly what a clear cancellation policy is for, which is why it is worth confirming before you pay a deposit rather than after something has already gone wrong. Ask your travel provider directly how a date change is handled, and keep any correspondence about it in case you need to refer back to it.

Testimonials

In their words.

  • “I decided to get engaged while my lovely girlfriend went to the UK for a short trip and I used the time to get a ring made while she was away. Gavin and his team gave me great advice and freedom. They helped me create and design my own ring, and taught me so much about the choices I have. They made the whole process a fantastic experience and I will totally send my friends back for the one on one experience.”
