Where out-of-town guests actually stay
Larger hotels tend to cluster around business districts such as Sandton and Rosebank, offering the convenience of familiar brands, meeting facilities and easy airport transfers. Smaller guesthouses are common through the northern suburbs and can suit a more intimate guest list well, often with more personal service and a quieter setting than a large hotel. Neither is automatically right; it depends on your guest list and how far they will travel.
Booking a room block
Holding a block of rooms at a hotel or guesthouse, usually at a negotiated rate for your guests, is worth arranging once your numbers are roughly settled. Ask directly how many rooms the block holds, by what date guests need to book to keep the rate, and what happens to unbooked rooms closer to the date, since terms vary between properties.
The morning after
A wedding weekend here often includes a smaller gathering the following morning, whether that is breakfast at the hotel or simply guests saying goodbye before flights home. Ask your chosen accommodation about checkout times relative to your guests' likely departure, and whether a later checkout can be arranged for the wedding party specifically.
A venue some distance from the city, with rooms of its own
Some couples choose a venue an hour or so outside Johannesburg, toward the Magaliesberg or the Cradle of Humankind, where accommodation is sometimes available on site or nearby rather than expecting guests to travel back into the city late at night. Ask the venue directly what accommodation it offers or can recommend, and confirm capacity and booking terms rather than assuming rooms will be available.
Checklist
- Decide between a hotel area and a guesthouse setting based on your actual guest list, not habit.
- Ask about a room block once your numbers are roughly settled, and confirm the booking deadline.
- Confirm checkout times and whether a later checkout is possible for the wedding party.
- If your venue is well outside the city, ask directly what accommodation it offers or recommends.
- Ask how far any recommended accommodation actually is from the venue, not just from the city centre.
- Confirm cancellation terms for the room block, including what happens to unbooked rooms.
Questions to ask in Johannesburg
- How many rooms does the block hold, and by what date do guests need to book to keep the rate?
- What happens to unbooked rooms in the block closer to the date?
- What are your checkout times, and can they be adjusted for the wedding party?
- How far is this accommodation from our venue, realistically, at the time guests would be travelling?
- Do you offer or recommend accommodation on site or nearby if our venue is outside the city?
