The wind before the wedding
A strong onshore wind is a regular feature of the summer months and can turn a beautiful outdoor space into an uncomfortable one within an hour. Ask any outdoor venue what its plan is once the wind reaches an uncomfortable strength, not whether it ever happens, and keep an indoor room in reserve.
Two coastlines, two moods
The ocean side of the peninsula runs cold and open, with dramatic light and a stiff breeze most afternoons; the bay side facing east is generally calmer and a few degrees warmer in the water. Visiting a venue on both sides before choosing shows how differently the same season feels.
Winter is not a lost season
Rain arrives in bands through the colder months, with clear, cold, often beautiful days between the fronts. Venues are quieter and sometimes better priced outside summer, and a room with large windows can make good use of a winter afternoon's low light without gambling on an outdoor ceremony.
A city of one-way streets and scarce parking
Venues in the city bowl and its surrounding suburbs rarely offer enough parking for a full guest list, and street parking on a Saturday evening near a popular restaurant is unreliable at best. Ask about valet arrangements or a shuttle from a nearby car park before assuming guests will drive themselves.
December's other event
Summer holidaymakers fill the city's restaurants, hotels and roads well before the festive season officially starts, and a wedding booked in that window competes with them for tables, rooms and taxis. Guest accommodation costs more and books out earlier than the rest of the year.
The mountain's shadow
Because the peaks close over much of the southern suburbs by mid-afternoon in winter and cast long shade even in summer, the same garden can look entirely different depending on the hour a ceremony is set. Ask to see photographs of a venue at the actual time of day the wedding will run.
Checklist
- Ask any outdoor venue what happens to the day once the wind reaches an uncomfortable strength.
- Visit venues on both the ocean side and the bay side before choosing which coastline suits the day.
- Confirm parking and valet arrangements in writing if the venue sits in the city bowl or a busy suburb.
- Check pricing and availability for a December date before the rest of the summer season fills up.
- Confirm accommodation for out-of-town guests early if the wedding falls near the December holiday period.
Questions to ask in Cape Town
- What is the plan if the wind is too strong for an outdoor ceremony on the day?
- Is there enough parking on site, or does the venue arrange valet or shuttle transport?
- How does pricing and availability change for a December or January date?
- What does the indoor back-up room look like, and does it hold our full guest list?
- Is the venue on the ocean side or the bay side, and how does that affect the afternoon light?
